Trekking in Luang Namtha
5-day trip (trek and homestay)
Day 1: Luang Prabang or Vientiane – Luang Namtha
Depart Luang Prabang by train at 11 pm to Nateuy station and arrive at 1:10 pm; car pick-up, then a 1-hour drive to Luang Namtha town. Rest, walk at the night market, and have dinner. Overnight at Phou Iu Bungalow
Day 2: Luang Namtha to Village – Approx. 4-5 hours
Start the trek at Doiluckkham, about 20 km from Luang Namtha town. The trail climbs through 20–30-year-old secondary forest into the upland rainforest of Nam Ha NPA, offering great ridge views before re-entering the forest. Enjoy a Lao-style picnic lunch in the cool upland forest or at a thatched farmer’s hut. Continue hiking for 2-3 hours under old-growth trees, arriving at the village before sunset. After checking into your homestay, explore the village and learn about their lifestyle, culture, and traditions. Enjoy a local dinner followed by community tourism activities.
Day 3: Ban Nalan to Ban Namkhoi – Approx. 5-6 hours
Start the day with breakfast and a bamboo cup of coffee, then hike through a tea garden into the jungle. Enjoy a valley view from a viewpoint before heading to the lunch site, where your guide will prepare Lao food (weather permitting). After lunch, trek through the jungle to observe nature, wildlife footprints, and traditional medicinal plants, all explained by the guides. At Namkhoi village, experience the Lanten tribe’s primitive lifestyle, unique culture, housing, clothing, and language. See handmade handicrafts, which you can buy as souvenirs. Before dinner, your guide will recommend places to bathe and stay. Enjoy dinner and community activities in the evening.
Day 4: Ban Namkhoi to Ban Namlue—Approx. 5-6 hours
After breakfast, follow the Nam Ha River, passing through Khmu and Lanten minority areas. The Lanten still wear traditional clothes, make textiles, dye clothes naturally, and produce bamboo paper (seasonally). After lunch and a village visit, trek up a steep hill in the jungle, offering beautiful forests and landscapes. The final descent passes upland cultivated areas tended by Namlue villagers. The trail steepens and can be slippery after rain. End the trek and return to Luang Namtha in the afternoon by tuk-tuk or van.
Day 5: Luang Namtha – Luang Prabang or Vientiane
Leisure at your own pace in Luang Namtha until 11:30 pm, car pick-up and transfer to Natuey train station to head back to Luang Prabang. The train schedule is 2:26 pm – 4:33 pm. Upon arrival, the car will be picked up, and then you will be transferred to your hotel.
